UN PLUS applauds Namibia`s decision to lift travel ban for people living with HIV GENEVA, 9 July 2010 – UN PLUS joins UNAIDS in applauding the decision by the Government of Namibia to lift its travel restrictions for people living with HIV and align the country’s legislation with international public health standards. The reforms—which took effect on 1 July—also remove entry restrictions against people living with other chronic conditions. UN PLUS, The group of UN staff living with HIV notes that such a decision will go a long way to strengthen the response to HIV and to AIDS in the country. It has now been shown, by international bodies such as the International Task team on HIV-Related Travel Restrictions and by the World Health Organization that Travel restrictions do not at all support national efforts at encouraging disclosure and efforts at Universal Access to treatment, care and support. Instead, such restrictions are known to stigmatize people living with HIV and push the epidemic further underground. UN Plus continues to work as an advocacy and support group for people living with HIV. The recent decision of the Namibian government will encourage public discourse on the AIDS response and enable our members in Namibia to freely access services. UN PLUS advocates for the rights of people living with HIV in the workplace and beyond—regardless of their levels of disclosure of HIV status. The group currently has 205 members, derived from a cross-section of UN agencies and associated programs. UN Plus continues to call for all relevant stakeholders and institutions to support the full removal of all forms of discrimination and restrictions on travel and residence for people living with HIV, as recently demonstrated by the United States, China and now Namibia. There now remain more than 50 countries that have some form of full or partial restriction. The full list can be obtained here: http://hivtravel.org/ (http://hivtravel.org/) Join our fight for equality- support the rights of people living with HIV! www.unplus.org
